Ward 74 youth engage with their councillor

Unemployed young people fill up the Waverley Sports Club as they engage with ward councillor and prospective employers.

Waverley Sports Club was abuzz with activity as unemployed, young people in the area had their first engagement with Ward 74 councillor Belinda Echeozonjoku.

The purpose of the engagement on September 21, was to hear first-hand if there was any progress on issues faced by young people within the ward. This was also to allow the youth an opportunity to engage freely with their elected public representative.

“One of the commitments I made prior to being elected as a ward councillor was that I would have regular engagements with residents and targeted groups, such the youth in the ward. Such engagements will be the first of many which will become a monthly occurrence. My other commitment was to engage private business in the ward to share information on training and work opportunities within the ward,” said Echeozonjoku.

The attendees were excited to speak with their ward councillor, with some commenting it is the first time this is happening in the ward. The attendees were also addressed by community activist, the chairman of Puntans Hill Cricket Club in Highlands North, Seano Naidoo.

The event included prospective employers who collected CVs from the attendees, as well as some attendees sharing potential opportunities with the rest of the group such as Glencore looking for second, third and fourth-year engineering students.

“To be able to provide a platform for unemployed young people to network and be connected to potential opportunities is a blessing, as many of these young people want the opportunity to be able to prove themselves,” said Echeozonjoku.

Unemployed youths in Ward 74 fill in forms to submit to prospective employers at their engagement with the councillor.

The next engagement will be the first week of October, and dates will be communicated across the ward.
