Houghton residents share mixed feelings about 16 Days of Activism
The 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence is an annual campaign that kicks off on November 25 and runs until December 10, Human Rights Day.
JULIUS OLUBODUN: I'm not sure if the campaign is effective or not, but it is important to study a region where such campaigns are required but are not being held for clearer data. Such campaigns are important to measure growth made in the period of campaigns and possible regression in the absence of such campaigns.
With 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence slowly approaching, the Gazette asked audience members in Houghton if they thought the 16-day initiative was effective in South Africa or not…
SARAH SEBETOLA: I doubt the campaign is effective and, if it is, it’s a drop in the ocean. My thoughts are that men need to do right by women and children without such campaigns to police their behaviour.AKI KALLIATAKIS: On average, a person has to see something 56 times before it sticks to one’s mind. I believe the messages to curb violence against women and children needs to be drilled into people’s minds hence the importance of the annual campaign.
