Pirates Club player selected for the Springbok Women’s Sevens national team training camp

Local Club player expresses her gratitude and excitement for being accepted to participate in the Springbok Sevens training camp.

Being selected to be part of the Springbok Women’s Sevens national team training camp does not happen every day.

Ratidzo Gurajena, known as Rati of the Pirates Club, has been presented with an opportunity to join the Springbok Sevens training camp this month.

The 24-year-old is a biokineticist by profession and coaches touch rugby at Parktown High School for Girls. She believes her passion for the game is what inspires her to keep going.

“I started playing rugby around 2017 and have been playing roughly for four years, as I took a year off from playing rugby due to my participation in the Touch Rugby World Cup,” Gurajena said.

Even though sometimes she faces difficulties and demotivating days, she is excited and humbled for the journey she will embark on.

“It is so great to know that the hard work I have been putting in has been recognized, it is not always easy for women in rugby to be noticed or to receive the right kind of exposure, so I am extremely grateful for the opportunity, and I plan to make the most of it,” she added.

As this opportunity is one of her dreams, she remembers one of her high school teachers’ speeches, in which she was advised that she must do something that sets her soul on fire.

“Since rugby does that for me, it sets my soul on fire I enjoy playing and learning more from it and blessed to work with some amazing coaches at both a club level and a provincial level.”
