The Johannesburg Succulent Society (JSS) hosted its annual festival at the Botanical Gardens in Emmarentia.
The judged succulent show had many speciality plants with a special focus on Southern African specimens, many of them decades old.

The sheer variety of plants on the show was impressive, but the overall winner was by far the most unique entry. Shaheer Seedat entered his plant, not for its beauty in particular, but to show the resilience of succulents even when humans pollute their environment. The striking arrangement of nature among trash and plastics was difficult not to appreciate. Seedat said, “From my excursions in the bush and noticing rubbish everywhere really impacted me. Seeing how nature continues despite what we do to it.”

Gerhard Sieburg, chairman of the JSS knew the name of every plant, and where it originates from and has an obvious love of all plants, but a special interest in succulents. “The JSS was founded in the 1940s and is the only surviving branch of the many that existed throughout the country.”

They have monthly meet-ups at the botanical gardens, host shows, and offer a range of activities for members and the public at large, such as this festival.
