UJ upsets Kovsies from UFS in Varsity Netball 2022 tournament in Pretoria

The UJ team continue their upward trend under coach Bongi Msomi.

The UJ netball team caused a major upset in the 2022 Varsity Netball tournament when they beat defending champions Kovsies from the University of the Free State (UFS).

The third-round match was played in the Rembrandt Hall at the University of Pretoria when UJ beat the defending champions 54–43. This is only the second time they have triumphed against UFS, the last being in 2016 in a closer match and winning 59–52.

Nomfundo Mngomezulu of UJ who has been offered a professional sponsorship with Netball South Africa said, “I’m very happy with the performance of my team, this is where we wanted to be, to get this win, this is what we needed. It’s all due to the hard work and to play with our hearts, I think that showed on the court.”

UJ coach Bongi Msomi said the team had been playing impressively since she took over in 2019.
