St Teresa’s School learner comes out tops in poetry competition

A St Teresa's Senior Primary School learner's use of figurative imagery and impressive diction earned her first place in poetry competition.

St Teresa’s Senior Primary School in Rosebank was invited to participate in the Rotary Club of Sandton’s Schools’ Poetry Competition in Term 2.

The prompt given was, It could be Wednesday. Computer educator and media liaison Lianda May said, “Many of our girls found the prompt quite abstract but gave their all and produced some beautiful pieces of poetry.”

The poems that were submitted were adjudicated by Dr Deirdre Byrne of the Institute for Gender Studies at the University of South Africa. Dr Byrne is especially well-known for her research in English literature, media studies, and social theory making her the perfect adjudicator for this year’s poetry competition.

Hannah Black follows the prompt, It could be Wednesday to write this first-place winning poem.

Out of 370 entries from more than 25 schools in Johannesburg, Hannah Black in Grade 7 came out on top. She achieved first place in the Grade 4 – 7 division as announced on September 4. May said Hannah’s poem is beautifully written, with stunning figurative imagery and impressive use of diction. The Grade 7s also took part in the Kingsmead Book Fair Young Writers’ competition, where Hannah was highly commended for her essay, entitled Runaway.

“We are so proud of Hannah’s accomplishments and we thank her for representing our school so well,” May said.
