Miss Earth South Africa in full spring swing

Trees planted at Houghton School by the Miss Earth South Africa team supplied with compost for longevity.

The Miss Earth South Africa team celebrated Arbour Day and the start of spring by planting trees.

The director of Miss Earth South Africa Leadership Programme, Ella Bella Leite said the team planted four pepper-bark trees (warburgia salutaris) together with the Miss Earth Johannesburg delegates at Houghton School.

Leite said in 2020 the Miss Earth South Africa organisation had planted five fruit trees which have blossomed.
To ensure the longevity of these trees, the organisation planted them with soil enhancers to lock in the nutrients and moisture and compost which was full of micro and macronutrients that are essential for soil health and tree growth.

Miss Earth South Africa delegates Savannah Zaki, Oratile Makunye, Namhla Matu, Zipho Sithebe and Victoria Welthagen plant pepper-bark trees at Houghton School for Arbour Day.

“Lucy Larcom [American teacher, poet, and author] once said, ‘she who plants a tree, plants hope’, and this is the hope and life we need in our schools and our communities,” said the programme’s co-director Catherine Constantinides.

Miss Earth South Africa will announce their ambassador at the Houghton Hotel at the end of September after which the ambassador will travel to the Philippines in October and represent South Africa in the International Miss Earth Event.
