TUT journalism student shares internship journey with Caxton

Everything that has a beginning has an ending and this is my ending as an intern journalist at Caxton.

Being a third-year journalism student at the Tshwane University of Technology requires one to complete a six-month internship programme to get your qualification.

My beautiful journey as a junior journalist began on March 1, as I was fortunate and blessed enough to get an internship offer from one of the biggest media companies in the country.

Reflecting on the first day I arrived at the office, I felt welcomed and at home, and I made friends and ‘family’ with the staff I was working with. Being a shy and socially awkward person, I have never experienced any negative vibes from the newsroom as everyone was always friendly.

My internship experience at the Craighall office has been amazing, fruitful, and magical because of how much love I received from other journalists and how willing they were to help and guide me as one of the babies in the newsroom. I am beyond grateful for that and for them to take me under their warm wings.

I have grown so much from this opportunity and improved my interviewing skills, communication skills, photography skills, and creative writing skills. I can confidently say that I am an experienced creative writer who gently brings words to life. I will always use the skills and knowledge I gained here and will never be without either.

Above all, I am grateful to the public and schools in the Rosebank and Killarney Gazette coverage areas for working with me and trusting me with your awesome stories and letting me work my word magic.

I would like to thank everyone in the newsroom for making me feel at home, especially the elephant crew, my mentor Ashtyn Mackenzie, Motlatsi Mailula, Naidine Sibanda, Chante’Ho Hip, and Asanda Matlhare.
