Wanderers Scorpions test their basketball mettle against Tshwane Spiders in pre-season thriller

The Johannesburg and Eagle basketball leagues are set to start in the second week of April, and if this match is anything to go by, the action is going to be thick and fierce.

In a heated pre-season basketball friendly on March 29, the Wanderers Scorpions took on the Tshwane Spiders in their first test against opposition from outside Johannesburg. With both teams eager to fine-tune their squads ahead of the upcoming basketball season, the match delivered a thrilling back-and-forth contest that kept spectators on the edge of their seats.

From the opening whistle, it was clear neither side was willing to back down. The Scorpions, known for their fast-paced play, clashed against the Spiders’ structured defence in what quickly turned into a high-intensity encounter. As the lead changed hands multiple times, each possession became a crucial battle, with both teams displaying grit and determination.

Despite the Scorpions’ spirited effort, the Spiders edged them out in the dying minutes, clinching a narrow 52–48 victory. Though disappointed with the result, Scorpions head coach Brian Masenda saw the match as a valuable learning experience for his team.

“It was a good test to help us prepare for this season, which is starting in a few weeks,” said Masenda. “The boys still have a long way to go in terms of getting our formations and plays sorted. However, we have made some good progress, and we expect continued improvement from the team.”

With the Eagles Basketball League and Johannesburg Basketball League potentially kicking off in the second week of April, the Scorpions are looking forward to building on their performance and sharpening their strategy. This closely fought battle against the Spiders has given them a clear indication of what needs to be refined as they aim for a strong campaign in the season ahead.

Basketball fans can expect an exciting season as teams across the region gear up for what promises to be a highly competitive league. If this pre-season clash was any indication, the Scorpions will be a team to watch once the real action begins.
