Elite performances propel Wanderers Karate to top of SA JKA Gauteng Championship
Competing in the novice, as well as the elite sections of the competition, the Wanderers Karate team walked away with a total of 43 medals.

The Wanderers Karate Club delivered a stellar performance at the South Africa Japan Karate Association (SA JKA) Gauteng Provincial Championships on March 14 and 15, once again proving their dominance in the sport. Held at the Standard Bank Arena, the tournament saw over 1 700 competitors battling it out, making it one of the most competitive events on the karate calendar. With 40 athletes representing Wanderers, the club showcased a perfect blend of experience and rising talent, delivering outstanding results across both the novice and elite divisions.

The action kicked off with the novice tournament on March 14, where the next generation of karatekas took to the mats, eager to test their skills on a big stage. Wanderers’ junior competitors put on an impressive display, showing the depth of talent coming up through the ranks. The momentum carried into the elite tournament the following day, where the club made its mark in some of the most competitive divisions, including senior elite open men’s kata and kumite, as well as senior elite open women’s kata and kumite.
Two of the club’s biggest victories came in these high-intensity categories, with Wanderers athletes crowned champions in the senior elite open men’s kumite and the senior elite open women’s kata. The men’s kumite champion fought through a field of top-tier competitors to claim gold, while, in the women’s division, an exceptional performance saw Wanderers secure another gold in kata, and a silver in kumite. Their technical precision, speed, and strategy set them apart in divisions stacked with elite talent.

By the end of the weekend, Wanderers had amassed an impressive 43 medals – 14 gold, 13 silver, and 16 bronze – solidifying their place as one of the top-performing clubs in Gauteng. Their continued improvement over the years, fuelled by exposure to international competition, was evident in the confidence and skill displayed on the tatami.
With this success under their belt, the team now turns its attention to the Africa Cup on May 23 and 24, where they will take on some of the best karate athletes on the continent. With momentum on their side, and a squad brimming with talent, Wanderers Karate Club is ready for the challenge ahead.
