St John’s College basketball boys crowned champions at AISJ tournament

The first team basketball beat Michael Mount Waldorf School 21–19 in a thrilling final.

St John’s College first team basketball etched their names in glory on February 1, clinching the American International School of Johannesburg (AISJ) Basketball Tournament title with a dramatic 21–19 victory over Michael Mount Waldorf School in the final.

The triumph was a testament to resilience and determination, as St John’s turned the tables on their opponents after suffering a setback against them in the group stages. The road to victory was anything but smooth, with the team overcoming formidable opposition en route to the championship.

Their journey saw them edge Pretoria Boys High School in overtime, pull off a stunning quarterfinal upset against top-seeded Westville Boys’ High School, and dominate St Benedict’s College 42–30 in the semifinals before sealing the title in a nail-biting final.

Standout performances came from Yanda Peter (UV Clayton), who was selected for the All-Star Team, and David Tirkaso (UV Thomson), who earned the prestigious Most Valuable Player award for his exceptional contributions throughout the tournament.

This win reinforces St John’s College’s standing as a prominent force in school basketball, and their success at AISJ will be remembered as a demonstration of talent, collaboration, and determination.
