The 2025 St John’s College head of school, Siza Gule and the second prefect, Menzi Bongwe are eager and excited to take their school to new heights in their leadership roles.
Siza said he has always felt gratitude and pride to be part of the school.

“Looking at the matrics we have had in our year and their leadership style, I immediately aspired to lead the school one day. It seemed like an enormous task at the time and felt surreal on the announcement day.”
He added the head of school must embody different characteristics that suit the year’s needs to achieve a certain vision.
“In the coming year, Menzi and I will work on ensuring that every student feels a sense of belonging and pride for St John’s and themselves. My role within this vision will be to exemplify an outstanding Johannian.”
The 17-year-old noted that his other leadership roles had been pivotal in his leadership development:
- Being in the Black Student Union has provided me with a forum to actively hear the student voice and chair discussions about sociology and how issues of race still affect us now.
- My experience within the Johannesburg Junior Council (JJC) and the Matric Dance Committee has taught me how to manage multiple projects.
- The JJC has also allowed me to explore the different backgrounds and demographics of people in our country, it has awakened a sense of moral agency within me such that I have been taught the importance of giving without expecting anything in return and taught me to give my time and service freely to benefit those in need.
Menzi said his appointment was surreal. ” I will never forget the school-wide applause I received. It has always been my dream to serve my school in any capacity deemed fit, and I feel indebted to the school for all it has done for me for over a decade.”
Menzi’s task will be to work closely with learners on discipline and administration and he aims to implement positive school-wide change and perpetuate a sense of pride in the school.
“I hope to use my entire leadership experience to serve as a role model to younger learners, not only as a prefect but also as a senior learner at St John’s. I am confident that as a prefect body, we are well equipped for learners and the greater community to benefit from a positive change from us.”
