On a sunny September morning, Norwood’s Paterson Park came alive as children gathered to celebrate Heritage Day, a time to honour South Africa’s diverse cultures and remember the sacrifices of those who fought against apartheid.
The park was filled with laughter, song, and dance as various local groups, including Lifeline Johannesburg, Norwood Youth Desk, Norwood Young Stars, COJ Sports and Recreation, SAPS, and Find Your Dream, hosted a vibrant event for the children of Norwood.

Venita Masisi from Norwood Young Stars explained the purpose behind the celebration. “We wanted to teach the kids about their heritage – where they come from, the different dances, and the foods. These days, kids are always on their gadgets, so we brought back games like Maharaba, and hopscotch to remind them of our traditions.”

As the children played, they learned about their roots, moving from the games to the rhythms of traditional dances. Masisi smiled as she watched them, proud that many knew the steps. The event also featured career guidance from Find Your Dream and the involvement of SAPS, ensuring a safe and meaningful day for all.
By the end of the morning, it was clear that this Heritage Day had achieved its goal – teaching the children of Norwood that their culture is something to cherish and celebrate. The event was a beautiful reminder of the unity, resilience, and joy embedded in South Africa’s diverse heritage.
