Hats on, hearts open: Support children’s palliative care this October

With a simple hat and a small gesture, South Africans can make a powerful impact on the lives of children facing life-limiting illnesses this October.

This October, South Africans are being urged to don their favourite hats – but it’s not just a fashion statement. On October 11, the Footprints 4 Sam Foundation calls on the public to raise awareness for children’s palliative care through the global Hats On 4 Children’s Palliative Care campaign. Whether it’s a vintage classic or a quirky DIY creation, simply wearing a hat could make all the difference in the lives of seriously ill children.

The annual campaign, now in its 11th year, is part of a worldwide initiative led by the International Children’s Palliative Care Network (ICPCN) to spotlight the plight of children facing life-limiting conditions. With over one million children in South Africa living with illnesses that could shorten their lives, the need for better access to palliative care is more critical than ever.

Melissa Platt, the founder of Footprints 4 Sam, stresses that palliative care is about much more than just medical treatment. “Children’s palliative care offers physical, emotional, and spiritual support to seriously ill children while assisting their families. In South Africa, where palliative care services are often underfunded or inaccessible, initiatives like: ‘Hats On 4 Children’s Palliative Care’, ensure these children aren’t overlooked. They deserve to live with dignity, comfort, and love.”

For just R25, you can buy a sticker, don your favourite hat, and take part in this fun and meaningful campaign. Beyond wearing a hat, you’re helping to bring much-needed awareness to a cause that touches thousands of families across the country. The funds raised will support Footprints 4 Sam’s initiatives, including palliative care training for healthcare professionals working with children and their families.

Ways you can get involved

1. Donate: Contributions made to Footprints 4 Sam will go towards training healthcare professionals who support families of seriously ill children. Your donation could directly improve the quality of life for these young patients.

2. Host a Hat Day: Why not get your school or workplace involved? Organise a Hat Day where participants donate a small fee to wear their hats. Pre-order stickers by October 1 and encourage some team spirit by having participants make their hats. It’s an easy yet effective way to raise awareness and funds for a worthy cause.

3. Share on Social Media: Take a photo of yourself in your hat, share it across social media, and tag @footprints4sam with the hashtags #HatsOn4CPC and #Footprints4Sam. Spread the word and encourage others to join in!

Through this light-hearted and accessible campaign, Footprints 4 Sam hopes to spark conversations about the importance of paediatric palliative care in South Africa, raise funds, and, most importantly, ensure that children living with life-limiting conditions are met with the care and compassion they deserve.

By simply putting on a hat, you can make a big difference this October. Join the movement, and let’s ensure no child walks their difficult journey alone.
