Tragic collision on M1 South leaves passenger dead, two hospitalised

A fatal multi-vehicle crash on the M1 South near Houghton on Monday afternoon left one person dead and caused significant traffic disruptions.

A fatal accident on the M1 South near Houghton brought traffic to a standstill on Monday afternoon, September 9, as emergency services responded to a multi-vehicle collision. The crash, which occurred around 13:40 near the Houghton Drive off-ramp, involved three vehicles and a pedestrian.

Authorities reported that the incident began when a white Mahindra pick-up travelling north struck a pedestrian crossing the freeway. The Mahindra then veered into a white Suzuki Vitara before swerving into oncoming traffic, landing on top of a white Toyota Hilux pick-up on the southbound side.

Tragically, a male passenger in the Toyota was killed on impact, while the female driver of the vehicle was rushed to Charlotte Maxeke Hospital with serious injuries. The pedestrian, a woman, also sustained severe injuries and was hospitalised. The driver of the Mahindra pick-up escaped with minor injuries.

Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) officers closed all southbound lanes as emergency responders worked to clear the scene and assist the victims. Motorists were advised to use alternative routes to avoid the area. Traffic resumed later in the day, though the crash caused significant delays during the afternoon.
