Ward 87 by-elections: a quiet start at Holy Family College

The Ward 87 by-elections in Johannesburg have drawn significant attention as voters decide who will represent them following the resignation of the previous DA councillor.

The by-elections for Ward 87 in the City of Johannesburg Municipality, taking place today (August 28), began with an unexpectedly quiet atmosphere at Holy Family College, one of the designated voting stations. Despite the importance of these elections in shaping the leadership of the ward, voter turnout has been low so far.

Outside the school, representatives from the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), Democratic Alliance (DA), Rise Mzansi, and the African National Congress (ANC) were out in full force, rallying their councillors and encouraging residents to cast their votes. Their energetic presence contrasted with the calm inside the voting station, highlighting the significance of these elections.

This ward is being contested by four political party candidates: Walleen Esme Mostert of the ANC, Kyle Dalton Jacobs of the DA, Aphelele Manyana of the EFF, and Malik Dasoo of Rise Mzansi. The ward was previously held by the DA but became vacant following the resignation of the councillor. In the 2021 Municipal Elections, the voter turnout for this ward was 48.78%.

As the day unfolds, the focus remains on whether voter participation will increase. For now, the quiet start at Holy Family College sets a reflective tone for what could be a crucial day for Ward 87.
