Kingsmead College diver selected for SA Junior Diving Squad

Maya has earned a coveted place on the South African Junior National Diving team, marking a significant achievement in her diving career.

Kingsmead College’s own Maya Rono has achieved a remarkable milestone in her diving career by being selected for the South African Junior National Diving team. This prestigious selection reflects years of dedication and hard work, tracing back to her early years.

Maya’s fascination with diving began in Grade 2, inspired by the elegance and excitement she observed at the Olympics. Her youthful energy and enthusiasm for trying new things set the stage for a passion that has only grown stronger. “The thrill of improving my skills and the sense of accomplishment after a successful dive keep me motivated,” she shares.

Being chosen for the national squad is a significant honour for Maya. “It’s a validation of all the hard work I’ve put in,” she explains. “It motivates me to strive for excellence and represent my country with pride.”

As she prepares for the Junior World Championship trials in October, Maya is dedicated to refining her techniques and enhancing her physical fitness. Her training regimen includes a combination of strength conditioning, flexibility work, and detailed dive practice with her coach. Despite the challenges, including limited access to indoor facilities for winter training, Maya remains focused on her goals.

To stay motivated, Maya sets short-term goals and visualises her success. She credits her ability to manage pressure during competitions to her routine, breathing exercises, and mental strategies. Balancing high-level competition with academic responsibilities is challenging, but Maya stays organised and disciplined with the support of her school. She emphasises the importance of strong time management skills.

Looking ahead, Maya has ambitious long-term goals. She aspires to compete at the senior level and represent South Africa at the Olympics. Additionally, she hopes to mentor young divers and contribute to the sport’s growth in her country.

Her journey has been supported by her family and friends, whose encouragement and sacrifices have been instrumental in her success. “Without their support, I wouldn’t have reached this level,” she acknowledges.

Maya’s advice for younger athletes aiming for the national level is simple, yet powerful: “Stay committed, believe in yourself, and embrace challenges as part of the journey. Surround yourself with supportive people and keep your passion alive.”

Maya’s dedication and achievements serve as an inspiring example for aspiring athletes, embodying the spirit of perseverance and excellence in sport.
