Women of courage inspire at UJW event

The Women of Courage event celebrated Women’s Month with a series of inspiring tales that captivated and motivated the audience.

The Johannesburg Jewish Union of Women hosted a memorable Women of Courage morning on August 18, in celebration of Women’s Month.

The event, which blended inspiration with emotion, featured speakers who shared their stories of resilience and perseverance.

MC Casey Garber-Shevel set the tone with light-hearted humour, even joking that the event was special ‘not only because of the cheesecake’. The audience, however, left with more than just a sweet treat, as they were moved to both tears and laughter by the heartfelt tales of overcoming adversity.

Speakers included Jacqui Miller, who shared the poignant story of raising her special needs son, Jude, who was diagnosed with autism. She has chronicled their journey in her book, Hey Jude.

Dionne Mincer recounted her remarkable recovery from a critical health crisis. After spending six weeks in ICU on a ventilator, she faced uncertainty about whether she would ever walk again. The support from her community was instrumental in her recovery and now she is back and sharing her inspiring story.

Itumeleng Sekhu-Pedi shared her harrowing experience of surviving a fire caused by a candle, and how she has transformed that ordeal into success by running her own candle-making business.

Dr Vumi Msweli spoke about her journey from being an accomplished coach and international speaker to her continued success, highlighting the challenges and triumphs along the way.

Erin Lazarus offered an inspiring account of her battle with lupus, an autoimmune disease she was diagnosed with in January 2022. As a lupus warrior and amputee, Lazarus’ story is one of relentless determination and resilience.

Each delivered powerful messages about the strength of the human spirit and the power of the mind in overcoming challenges. Their stories served as a reminder to never give up, no matter the obstacles faced. The event was a poignant tribute to the courage and resilience of women, fittingly celebrated during Women’s Month.
