In light of Women’s Month, women from the community of Norwood had a roundtable discussion on August 16 at Norwood Police Station to discuss the problems they faced daily.
The organiser of the roundtable discussion Mimi Ndlovu said, “We have decided that women must come together and have empowerment conversations surrounding the Norwood community.”
Ndlovu added it was a day when women were encouraged to speak up about whatever issues they were faced with.
Unemployment was the common conversation in the room. The latest statistics revealed that the unemployment rate in South Africa increased to 33.5% in the second quarter of 2024, leaving 8.4 million citizens jobless.
Statistics South Africa also revealed that 3.6 million (35.2%) out of 10.3 million people aged 15 to 24 years were not in employment, education, or training.
Leading the conversation, Venita Masisi suggested that the women could create a WhatsApp group where several job opportunities could be posted and shared throughout the community.
Self-development and women empowerment conversations were also shared among the women as well as how to better the community and GBV-related issues.
Princess Motimele said she attended the event because she was all for women’s empowerment and was always prepared to learn from other women.
