Parktown High School for Girls baseball player’s baseball dreams come true

Aaliyah Oliver's accolades in baseball include being the most valuable player and best fielder.

Parktown High School for Girls congratulated baseball player Aliya Oliver for qualifying in the U18 ladies baseball squad.

Aaliya said that she was excited about the selection, “I’m incredibly proud of myself for working hard in the regional tournament and showcasing my skills to make it through the selection. It has been my dream to compete at a national level and represent South Africa.”

The 16-year-old began playing baseball in 2019. At the time she played club softball and was invited to a baseball training session which introduced her to baseball, and loved playing the sport from then and belongs to Mets Baseball Club located in Randburg.

The baseball player said juggling the sport and academics was challenging, “I have been working on staying disciplined by setting specific times each day to focus on my studies and practice sessions.”

During the week, her practice sessions include throwing progressions, catcher drills, glove work, and a 2km run.

“On weekends, we have three-hour training sessions that focus on enhancing our batting and catching skills and preparing us, both individually and as a team, for upcoming games,” she explained.

Aaliyah concluded that receiving an accolade for the most valuable player and best fielder from different leagues she has played in keeps her going and motivates her to do her best.
