St John’s snatches victory from Parktown Boys’ in electrifying season opener

In a pulsating season opener, St John's first team edged past Parktown Boys’ with a dramatic 2–1 victory, thanks to a last-minute strike.

The soccer season roared to life with a dramatic clash as St John‘s edged past Parktown Boys‘ 2–1 in a match that kept fans on the edge until the final whistle. The game, marked by high-intensity and tactical play, showcased both teams’ strengths and areas for improvement.

St John’s set the pace early, taking the lead with a goal that tested Parktown Boys’ resolve. Determined to equalise, Parktown Boys’ responded swiftly, levelling the score shortly after. The first half saw both teams engaged in a fierce battle, with Parktown Boys’ applying constant pressure and St John’s opting for a more defensive approach.

Despite Parktown Boys’ aggressive attacking strategy, St John’s capitalised on their chances and found the back of the net again in the dying minutes of the match, securing a dramatic win.

Parktown Boys’ head coach, Zama Makhoba, reflected on the game, saying, “I think we did well in the first half, but in the second half, we gave them too much space, especially in our half. There’s still room for improvement. It’s only the season’s first game, and with many new players in the first team, we hope to refine our game and push forward.”

St John’s head coach, Anele Mlonzi, praised his team’s resilience: “The team fought hard today, showing the level of preparation needed for next week’s tournament. Despite lacking confidence in the first half, the players returned stronger in the second half and secured the win. We now need to focus on correcting some mistakes and boosting player confidence as we prepare for the upcoming tournament.”
