Deutsche Internationale Schule Johannesburg learner Zanele Radebe talks about her journey of being in the Johannesburg Student Council (JSC) and how it is a catalyst in the change she does in her school and community.
The JSC empowers future leaders and brings together a diverse group of over 100 high school students from 60 schools across the city. As a platform for youth voices, they tackle pressing issues and propose innovative solutions, gaining valuable insights into local government and civic engagement.
Under the guidance of the Office of the Speaker, the young change-makers learn about the complexities of political decision-making, developing essential skills to shape the city’s future.

Zanele’s journey with the council began when she met a former JSC member who shared her experiences and benefits of being part of the council.
“What caught my attention was the opportunity to have dinner with the President. At first, I didn’t fully understand the council’s purpose, but I was drawn to being part of something significant that could enable me to help people.”
A year later, she decided to take a chance on the council by giving a motivational speech and campaign, but didn’t win the election. The results showed that she wasn’t selected as a representative.

“On the last day of school, I received unexpected news, the chosen candidate was leaving the school, and I was the runner-up. As a result, I was offered the position, and I accepted.”
As legal advisor to the junior mayor, Zanele provides legal guidance and ensures compliance with school policies.
“What I enjoy most is the collaborative environment and the chance to work with like-minded individuals who share a passion for leadership and service. JSC empowered me to think big and strive for excellence, even as a young person, and believe that if you have an idea or a passion, you should pursue it, regardless of your age.”
Zanele encouraged the youth to join the JSC.
“Joining the council is a chance to start something new, lead initiatives, and create positive change, regardless of age. As former President Nelson Mandela said, ‘The youth of today are the leaders of tomorrow’.”
