Rosebank embraces Mandela Day spirit with heartfelt community initiative

Rosebank recently exemplified the spirit of Mandela Day with a powerful display of community unity and compassion.

Nelson Mandela’s profound words, ‘what counts in life is not the mere fact that we have lived. It’s the difference we have made to the lives of others that will determine the significance of the life we’ve led’, captured the essence of Mandela Day 2024. On July 18, the Rosebank Homeless Association (RHA) and its partners in Johannesburg embodied Mandela’s legacy through an inspiring act of compassion and unity.

The event saw an extraordinary collaboration between RHA, the Modern Community Foundation, Kaya FM, Clicks, Cuisino, Hardrock Café, and the Rosebank SAPS. Their mission was to provide meals and a sense of community, dignity, and hope to the homeless. Tumi Siluma from RHA emphasised, “Mandela Day carries a meaning that resonates with the spirit of giving and sharing, aligning perfectly with our mission.”

Cuisino and Hardrock Café added their culinary expertise, offering hearty and uplifting meals. Kaya FM amplified the spirit of the day through their extensive reach, encouraging the broader community to join in the effort.

Revel Harris, managing director of the Modern Community Foundation, highlighted the event’s significance. “We are helping those who had misfortune, so they can have a sense of belonging. This partnership has shown that when we come together with open hearts, we can create a world where everyone is treated with dignity and respect.”

As the event concluded, the gratitude and smiles from the homeless participants underscored the day’s impact. This Mandela Day initiative was more than a momentary relief; it was a powerful reminder of the ongoing need for community solidarity and support.
