South African rowing champions ready to conquer Paris Olympics

Arbour Café in Birdhaven was the epi-centre on July 10, for the send-off of the South African rowing team for the Paris Olympics.

South Africa’s rowing community gathered with immense pride and unwavering support at Arbour Café in Birdhaven, to rally behind three esteemed athletes bound for the Paris Olympics.

John Smith, Christopher Baxter and Paige Badenhorst, the nation’s rowing champions, were honoured amid an exciting atmosphere.

Paige Badenhorst is set to represent South Africa in the women’s single sculls.

The event, attended by members of the South African Rowing Federation, former champions, and sponsors, highlighted the eager backing behind these athletes as they prepare to represent the nation on the world stage. Alison Badenhorst, chief marketing officer of RMB, expressed profound confidence in the team, remarking, “We believe in the power of sport to unite, and we are confident that our team will represent South Africa with a spirit of determination and resilience.”

President of Rowing South Africa Sean Kerr voiced immense pride in the team’s accomplishments, stating, “Our athletes have trained tirelessly to reach this pinnacle. I do not doubt that they will make both Rowing and Team South Africa proud.”

Paige Badenhorst, set to compete in the women’s single sculls, conveyed her joy at representing her country, describing it as a dream come true. “I am proud to wear the green and gold at the greatest sporting event in the world. This is a gratifying moment in my career,” she said, aiming to inspire future generations of athletes with her journey.

John Pri, part of the men’s pair with Christopher Baxter, reflected on their unique position as underdogs in the competition. “We are a new combination, an unexpected threat. The world doesn’t fear us yet—that’s our advantage,” he affirmed, underscoring their determination to defy expectations.

Tiago Loureiro, head coach of the RMB National Squad, emphasised their relentless preparation for the Olympics. “It’s an extraordinary privilege to represent our country on this stage. As it’s just a few days before the Paris Olympics begins, the South African rowing team stands poised to make their mark, fuelled by national pride and the collective support of their community.
