Ivor Jones’ rise from dancer to renowned director

Ivor Jones' journey from dancer to renowned theatre director is a captivating tale of passion, perseverance, and unyielding dedication to the performing arts.

In the quiet suburb of Craighall, resides a man whose career in the performing arts spans continents, genres, and decades. Ivor Jones, a director at the National Children’s Theatre (NCT), has a story brimming with passion, hard work, and love for the arts that has propelled him to success.

Jones started his career as a professional dancer, “The highlight of my dancing career was performing at the Lido in Paris for four years,” he recalls. After returning to South Africa, he joined the Extravaganza Theatre at Sun City and became the company manager. Over 18 years, he rose through the ranks to become a theatre manager, directing three major Extravaganza Shows and leaving a lasting impact.

During his time at Sun City, Jones directed corporate functions and international pageants, which helped him transition from dancer to director. He started his professional dance career with Brickhill Burke, and later became dance director for the iconic production Ipi Tombi, taking him to London.

Jones’ career shifted to children’s theatre during the Covid-19 pandemic. “During Covid, set and costume designer Sarah Roberts asked if I was interested in directing Peter Rabbit at the [NCT],” he shares. He was initially hesitant but was won over by the idea of directing young professional actors. This opportunity led to several successful productions at the NCT, showcasing his versatile directorial skills.

Preparation for a new production is always a challenge, but Jones thrives on it. “I prefer to work with a team that I have 100% confidence in,” he explains. His directorial style is simple, yet effective: “I work solely to entertain the audience, and keep my vision clear and straightforward.”

Reflecting on his favourite production, Ivor cites Pulse, an Extravaganza at Sun City with an African theme and a large cast. “There is so much talent, music, and resources in this country,” he enthuses.

Jones, an experienced director, finds motivation in the new challenges and the energy of young actors. He advises aspiring directors to know their limitations, choose appealing work, and be open to new ideas. Recently returned from directing in New York, he’s heading to Hong Kong for another major project. His hobbies include travelling, going to the gym, dining out, and attending shows, while his vibrant circle of friends keeps him mentally stimulated.

The biggest challenge in his work, he notes, is the language barrier when working abroad. Yet, despite these challenges, his commitment to the NCT remains unwavering. “I love that old house, with all its great memories, and fabulous shows,” he says fondly. Watching young actors grow and succeed on global stages is, for Jones, immensely rewarding.

Ivor Jones’s journey from dancer to director is evidence of his dedication and love for the performing arts. His work continues to inspire and entertain audiences of all ages.
