Peter Rabbit and Me explores the origins of Beatrix Potter’s beloved story, illustrating how young Beatrix and her adventurous brother, Bertram, navigate their childhood dreams and challenges. While her brother dreads boarding school, Beatrix finds solace in her imagination, creating whimsical adventures for Peter Rabbit. Her resourcefulness transforms a dreary nursery into a world of mischief and excitement, overseen by Beatrix herself.

The play emphasises the power of imagination, showing that anyone can create and live in an alternate world, regardless of their circumstances. ‘It’s fun to have fun, but you have to know how’, encapsulates the spirit of the production.

Directed by Ivor Jones, he expresses his passion for entertaining young audiences and the joy of seeing children’s reactions to the play’s interactive elements. “I love entertaining young children and I just want them to have fun and enjoy the play as much as I have enjoyed directing it,”.

The cast, selected from 42 auditionees, is a talented group of young actors who bring the characters to life with their singing, dancing, and acting abilities. Their performances are complemented by the creative set and costume design by Sarah Roberts, musical direction by Christine Ludwig, lighting by Jane Gosnell, and stage management by Sinenhlanhla Zwane.

Jones highlights the play’s appeal, “Peter Rabbit is ideal for children of all ages. They love the interaction with the actors and the happy, familiar story.” He adds that the fight scene between Kep and Mr Fox, where Kep triumphs, is a particular favourite among young audiences.

Despite the short preparation time of one week for production design and three weeks of rehearsals, the show is a polished and vibrant experience. Jones attributes the success to his familiarity with the play and the exceptional talent of the cast.

“The most rewarding part for me as a director was working with five very talented actors, who loved the rehearsal period, and seeing the children’s happy smiles as they left the theatre,” he reflected.
