New study finds South African employees face escalating mental health crisis

A new report by Life Health Solutions reveals a shocking surge in mental health risks among South African employees, highlighting a crisis that demands urgent attention.

Life Health Solutions, a prominent provider of health risk management within the occupational and employee well-being sector, has unveiled alarming data pointing to a rising trend of mental health risks among South African corporate employees.

The comprehensive research, spanning from 2018 to 2023, highlights a significant escalation in mental health risk cases. These cases encompass individuals who pose a safety risk to themselves, others, or their organisations due to factors such as suicidal thoughts, substance abuse, and financial instability.

Notably, mental health risk cases among men rose to 37.12% in 2023, from 35.10% in 2018. Equally, cases among women slightly decreased from 64.90% in 2018 to 62.88% in 2023. Despite the overall higher prevalence of mental health risks among women, societal stigma and reluctance among men to seek help may contribute to under-reporting.

The data also highlights a worrying trend among younger individuals, with those aged 30-39 forming the largest group at risk in 2023. Alarmingly, 10.78% of those at risk were under the age of 19. Moreover, there was a significant increase in dependents of employees facing mental health challenges, underscoring the broader impact of workplace stress on families.

Key drivers identified include depression, stress, relationship difficulties, a sharp rise in anxiety, domestic violence, bereavement, and challenges adjusting to life changes.
