The Jozi Cup finals on June 17, saw the GM Old Edwardians deliver a masterclass in cricket, as they showcased their skill and tenacity across multiple divisions, leaving fans bowled over by their spectacular performance.

The grand finale of the winter T20 cricket season reached its zenith on June 17, as the Central Gauteng Lions hosted the highly anticipated Jozi Cup finals. Amid the electric atmosphere at the iconic Wanderers Stadium, the GM Old Edwardians hit it out of the park, showcasing their skills across multiple divisions.

Under the leadership of Punith Keshav, the Senior Men’s team faced off against Randburg in a match that kept spectators on the edge of their seats. Randburg posted a formidable total of 199/7, thanks to some spirited bowling performances from youngsters Akash Chatterjee (3/23) and Connor Kuijers (1/18), who bowled a perfect line and length over their allotted four overs each.

In response, GM Old Edwardians embarked on a calculated chase. The highlight of the innings was undoubtedly Warren Shankland’s brilliant century, as he blazed 102 runs off just 52 balls, making the most of the Bullring’s lively pitch. Supported by Wade McQuinn’s steady 29 off 29 balls and a fiery finish from Dalton Webster, who smashed 24 off 11 balls, the Old Edwardians clinched victory with 200/4, winning by six wickets with three balls to spare. It was a performance that truly bowled the crowd over.

Later in the evening, MacFarlane’s Premier XI took to the field against Marks Park Thistles. Opting to bowl first, the decision paid dividends as Muzammil Sheik spearheaded the attack with 4/32. Ably supported by Mitchell van Buuren (2/24) and John Farrell (2/23), who notably dismissed Protea star Zubayr Hamza with his very first delivery, the Thistles were restricted to 164 all out with just two balls left in their innings. The bowlers were on a hat-trick of excellence.

The chase, however, began on a shaky note with Reuben du Toit and SA U19 star Lhuan-dre Pretorius departing early, leaving Old Ed’s precariously placed at 2/6. Enter Van Buuren and Neil Timmers, who orchestrated a remarkable 131-run partnership. Van Buuren’s explosive 73 off 33 balls, featuring three boundaries and seven sixes, laid the foundation, while Timmers’ unbeaten 78 off 41 balls anchored the innings. Fittingly, Sheik sealed the victory with a massive six, as GM Old Edwardians finished on 170/4, winning by six wickets with 32 balls to spare. It was a textbook finish that had the fans stumped.

Du Toit’s exceptional all-round display earned him the titles of Premier Batsman and Player of the Tournament, with 468 runs and seven catches. Their performances were the icing on the wicket.
