Thousands show up for Yoga Day at DP Wanderers

Thousands filled DP Wanderers Stadium to celebrate international yoga day.

In what was celebrated as the largest free outdoor event, DP Wanderers Stadium served as the host of International Yoda Day 2024.

The massively attended event, held on June 22, drew in an ensemble of yoga experts, novices, and lifelong practitioners. Ahead of the guided yoga session, participants arrived to find the transcendental sound of healing music wafting through the stadium.

Described as the driving force behind the occasion, the Consulate General of India in Johannesburg Mahesh Kumar welcomed everyone who came to share in the benefits of yoga.

“This is the 10th edition of International Yoga Day. As you see, every year it’s getting bigger in terms of the celebrations here in Johannesburg,” Kumar said. “To all the yogis, and people who believe in yoga; people who believe in unity and diversity, and simplicity, a very warm welcome.”

The event was further enhanced by a variety of stalls retailing food, travel solutions, jewellery, fashion and an assortment of knickknacks – presenting something for everyone.

Kumar, as well as his counterpart from the High Commission of India to South Africa, Commissioner Shri Prabhat Kumar, could routinely be seen on the big screen breathing easily as their bodies became energised through the mystic contortions of yogic exercises.
