Rosebank-based NPO equips locals with ICT and cybersecurity skills

Morden Centric Academy is an empowerment organisation aimed at empowering marginalised individuals.

Rosebank-based NPO, Modern Community Foundation’s Morden Centric Academy is collaborating with Cisco Networking Academy to offer the youth and the LGBTQIA+ community a free technopreneurship development programme.

In light of International Pride Month, the academy is offering a course called ‘Queer in Tech’ which will be run yearly and has no age restriction and no experience required.

Founder Mntobisa Ndhlovu explained that Morden Centric Academy was an empowerment organisation that aimed to empower marginalised individuals. The main goal is for students to acquire a skill to enable them to work abroad if needed.

“Marginalised in the sense that students cannot afford tertiary education but want to get qualified and certified in certain ICT and agriculture courses. We offer occupational qualifications that are ICT and NQF levels 4 and 5,” he said.

The academy also offers national agriculture certificates, levels 2-4.

Mntobisa Ndhlovu helps two students navigate their platforms.

“We partnered with them [Cisco] because they are globally recognised and have free introductory courses that enable us to run this initiative for free – mainly in cybersecurity and data science.”

Other courses offered by the academy include ‘Imbokodo in Tech’ which is for women already in tech and enables them to hone their skills. They also offer ‘Youth in Tech’ that will be held simultaneously with ‘Queer in Tech’.
