Parktown North ballet dancer prepares to fly South African flag in Berlin

Rahl Burke took up dancing as an extracurricular at school and one of the teachers encouraged him to take up gymnastics.

Parktown North-based dance studio, Orlovska Dance Academy student, Rahl Burke prepares to fly the South African flag at the Berlin State Ballet School.

Rahl was recently awarded a prestigious full scholarship which will commence from September 9, to study at the world-renowned State Ballet School.

“I am filled with gratitude towards the teachers who prepared me to an international standard which has always been my dream.”

Burke explained that he began his dancing journey as an extracurricular at school and one of the teachers encouraged him to take up gymnastics. “I enjoyed how difficult it was compared to other activities I’ve participated in and that led me to have such respect for the art form.”

Owner and the teacher at Orlovska Dance Academy Alisa Balayan expressed her excitement for the dance student.

“His success is a testament to his talent, hard work, and the exceptional training he received. We thank the academy’s instructors for their dedication and support in preparing Rahl for this journey. We do not doubt that Rahl will continue to thrive and achieve great heights at the Berlin State Ballet School.”

Burke embarked on a two-week scholarship to the Berlin State Ballet School, this scholarship not only served as an audition but also as a testament to the exceptional training received at the Orlovska Dance Academy.

The ballet dancer said throughout his dancing journey, he learned the importance of a healthy diet and consistency in routine. “The ability to improve his work by himself by having a good education of the styles I perform, and how to manage the constant criticism you are experiencing and manage it constructively.”

Balayn highlighted that Burke’s success served as an inspiration to aspiring dancers within the community and beyond. It exemplified the importance of nurturing young talent and providing them with the resources and guidance necessary to excel in their chosen fields.
