St John’s Sixth Form alumnus Zach Onyejiaka has been celebrated as the Top A Level Student in South Africa in the 2023 Cambridge International Academic Awards.
Zach, a standout learner from the Class of 2023, expressed his surprise and gratitude at receiving this prestigious recognition. “I feel honoured to be recognised for this accomplishment. It’s a confirmation that I can overcome challenges when I’m focused,” he shared.

Zach is interning at Alchemy Capital Partners in New York. He will start his mathematics degree at the University of Edinburgh in September. “I wanted to go somewhere that encourages students to pursue more than just a degree. The sports facilities, clubs, societies, and cultural activities offered reminded me of the freedom and quality of choice I had at St John’s College.
” I’m eager to immerse myself among more advanced peers, learning from them and building valuable networking connections,” he said.
Looking forward, Zach plans to make the most of the opportunities available at Edinburgh, aiming to graduate with a first-class degree. His long-term goal is to gain experience within the financial services industry, ultimately aspiring to become a successful entrepreneur.
Reflecting on his time at St John’s Sixth Form, Zach credited the supportive and competitive environment for his success. He also highlighted the valuable time management skills he learned from studying Latin and participating in sports and the Community Engagement Committee.
Zach advised current learners to embrace opportunities and challenges. “Attending a school like St John’s College and St John’s Sixth Form is a privilege few experience. Involve yourself in as much as you can, and work diligently. Not only will you have a great time, but you will also develop into the kind of student that any university would admire.”

At the recent 2023 Cambridge International Academic Awards, Zach was honoured not only as the Top A Level Student in South Africa but also for being the top in the country for A Level mathematics and receiving High Achievement awards for IGSCE Latin and A Level further mathematics.
Zach’s journey from St John’s to becoming the top A Level student in South Africa is proof of his dedication, hard work, and the supportive environment of his alma mater. His story serves as an inspiration for learners across the country.
