Johannesburg’s Ward 117 maintains water supply amid infrastructure strain

Despite challenges facing Johannesburg's water infrastructure, Ward 117 maintains stable reservoir levels, ensuring continued supply for residents.

In recent updates from ward councillor Tim Truluck, concerns over water infrastructure in Johannesburg’s Ward 117 have come to the forefront.
Truluck highlighted significant issues with Johannesburg Water, noting more than 20 major burst pipes in his ward alone. He estimated that addressing these challenges could require up to R100 million per suburb over several decades.

However, amid these concerns, Ward 117’s current water supply status remains relatively stable according to recent reports. This is despite the ongoing maintenance by Rand Water which has left many suburb’s taps bone-dry.

Read more on what you need to know about the maintenance:

The ward is primarily serviced by three reservoirs – Parktown 2, Dunkeld, and the Northcliff system. As of the latest update from Truluck on June 26, Parktown 2 Reservoir stands at 71% capacity, down from 89% the previous day, while the Northcliff system, supplying Victory Park and surrounding areas, reports its tower at 70% and reservoir at 88% capacity.
There were no percentages available on the Dunkeld Reservoir which is supplemented by Linksfield, and serves areas such as Parktown North and Parkhurst.

In response to the ongoing maintenance work, residents are urged to use water sparingly in the coming weeks. For those directly affected, water collection points have been established in various strategic locations across Ward 73 (Houghton, Norwood, Killarney) and Ward 74 (Wanderers, Melrose, Bramley). These points include several BP and Caltex garages, as well as local parks and shopping areas.

As Johannesburg navigates these infrastructure challenges, local authorities continue to monitor and address the situation, aiming to ensure minimal disruption to residents’ daily lives.
