Gauteng gamers shift into overdrive at Rosebank Mall
Rosebank Mall became a battleground of digital warriors from June 21-23, 2024, as the Hyprop MTN Shift Gaming Experience captivated Gauteng with its high-energy gaming tournament and community festivities.
Gaming lovers and tech fans rushed to enjoy South Africa’s largest mall-based gaming tournament.
With R200 000 in prize money at stake across eight nationwide qualifiers, the event drew an enthusiastic crowd of gamers and fans, eager to witness and participate in the competition.
The Hyprop MTN Shift Gaming Experience took over Rosebank Mall in Gauteng from June 21 to 23. The weekend’s highlight was the EA sports tournament, where intense matches culminated in the crowning of new champions. Zaid April claimed first place, showcasing remarkable gaming skills. Riaasat Ebrahim and Aqil Sampath took second and third places, respectively. April’s victory earned him a spot in the national finale, scheduled for September 11–15 at Canal Walk in Cape Town, where finalists will compete for the ultimate title and a share of the grand prize pool.
Rosebank Mall was a hive of activity as gamers and spectators immersed themselves in the vibrant atmosphere. Besides the tournament, the event featured a variety of engaging activities. Virtual racing enthusiasts participated in GT 7 Races, while Fortnite duels saw players engage in strategic battles. Fighting game face-offs highlighted competitors’ skills in action-packed matches, and Minecraft challenges allowed players to demonstrate creativity and survival instincts.
Muhammad Varchia, general manager of the mall, expressed his satisfaction with the event. “We are thrilled with the turnout and the vibrant atmosphere this weekend. It brought together a diverse group of gamers and spectators, creating a buzz that was palpable throughout the mall. The event also included several interactive activities, ensuring widespread participation. Rocket League matches provided adrenaline-pumping excitement while platform-fighting fans enjoyed intense Brawlhalla action. Aim Lab challenges tested attendees’ marksmanship, and the MTN Beat Saber Challenge offered a rhythm-based VR gaming experience, with the weekend’s highest scorer winning an Xbox Series S. The Keyboard Rebuild Race added a unique twist, as participants raced to rebuild keyboards for exciting prizes.
