The art of living: Inside the world of John Anthony

John Anthony's art is a vivid symphony of colour and emotion, reflecting a life rich with diverse experiences and deep passions.

John Anthony is a name that echoes through the art world with the same quality as a beautifully struck chord.
An artist whose work is celebrated for its vivid expression and emotive depth, Anthony’s creative journey has been anything but ordinary. He resides in Rosebank, where his studio is also an apartment in which he stays, seamlessly blending his living and creative spaces.

When Anthony is not immersed in his art, he finds joy in life’s simple pleasures, savouring authentic food, music, and films, and engaging in meaningful conversations with friends. These activities, he believes, are vital sources of inspiration, feeding his soul and enhancing his creative output. “Fun and recreation are essential,” Anthony said. “They fuel my soul and provide an important source of inspiration.”

Elif Shafak’s Forty Rules of Love had a profound impact on Anthony’s views about love, spirituality, and peace, which greatly influenced his artistic narrative. “I believe that love, spirituality, and peace go hand in hand.” This philosophical alignment informs much of his artistic narrative.

One of the defining moments in Anthony’s youth was the vibrant artistic atmosphere of New York in the 80s. This experience provided him with a sense of freedom and confidence that has been instrumental in his artistic journey. “Exploring the world and its people gave me a sense of freedom and confidence.”

In addition to his art, Anthony is currently pursuing a PhD in Visual Arts, further expanding his academic and creative horizons. This scholarly endeavour complements his artistic practice, enriching his perspective and deepening his engagement with visual culture.

Anthony collaborates with Art Aid, bridging urban and rural artistic practices. Through his art, he addresses social and political issues, focusing on connecting urban and rural communities. His upcoming exhibition, Asiwele – Crossing the Divide, exemplifies this commitment.
