Adidas Runners of Joburg play their part with Friends of Zoo Lake

Adidas Runners teamed up with Friends of Zoo Lake to protect the places they play as part of the global initiative.

Adidas Runners of Joburg teamed up with Friends of Zoo Lake on May 19, to protect the places they play as part of the Adidas Move for the Planet global initiative.

Runners and communities across the globe set out to move for the places they play in. For every 10 minutes of movement logged on the Adidas running app between May 10 and May 22, the company contributes €1 (R20.31) to the Common Goal Project, with up to €1.5 million (R30 456 342) allocated to projects that provide education on sustainability and make sports facilities more resilient against extreme weather conditions such as heatwaves and flooding.

Weekly, Adidas runners run from the Zoo Lake Bowls Club and have done so for more than six years.

This year, they wanted to give back to the space, and their captain, KJ Forde reached out to Fran Haslam from Friends of Zoo Lake to see how they could assist the committee in rehabilitating Zoo Lake Park.

Haslam requested assistance with the flower beds, and the running community was happy to lend a helping hand, “The project involved de-weeding the beds and re-mulching the grounds. They grabbed their gloves, shovels, and wheelbarrows and got to work under the guidance of Fran and her team.”

The member of the Friends of Zoo Lake concluded that the day was successful not only for the accomplishments within the event timeframe but also for the lasting impact on those present.

“The committee’s continuous and tireless efforts to keep the park in pristine condition were inspiring, and learning about their behind-the-scenes work left a profound impression on everyone in attendance.”
