The event was part of a global initiative led by the International Kidney Cancer Coalition, dedicated to raising awareness about kidney cancer and promoting patient empowerment under this year’s theme, Listening.

C4C, renowned for its commitment to providing the South African public with credible cancer-related information, organised the event to highlight the crucial role of ‘listening’ in healthcare. The theme emphasised three key aspects, the benefits of shared decision-making between patients and healthcare providers, the empowerment of patients to seek second opinions, and the importance of discerning reliable sources to combat misinformation.

“I think it’s a good initiative, especially for our communities,” remarked Ntokozo Dludla, a participant at the event. “Often, diseases like kidney cancer don’t get the attention they deserve because they’re not as well-known as breast cancer or others. Events like this help raise awareness and encourage people to take their health seriously.”

Lynda Woods, another attendee, expressed her support for the event’s mission. “Kidney cancer is a silent killer, and raising awareness is crucial. Many patients avoid seeing a doctor until it’s too late. That’s why initiatives like this are so important—to encourage early diagnosis and treatment,” she said.

The choice of a Silent Disco was both symbolic and practical, encouraging attendees to listen – a metaphor for paying attention to kidney health. Participants put on wireless headphones, and danced to the music while the sun set over Johannesburg, embodying the event’s focus on physical activity as a means of promoting kidney health.

As the event progressed, informational sessions were spread with musical interludes, providing attendees with accessible and valuable knowledge about preventing and managing kidney diseases. This innovative approach fostered a sense of community and reinforced the critical message of ‘listening to one’s body, to credible information and healthcare professionals’.
