Giraffes take centre stage on World Giraffe Day at Johannesburg Zoo
On the longest day of the year in the northern hemisphere, Johannesburg Zoo marked World Giraffe Day with a special programme for young learners, emphasising the urgent need for giraffe conservation.
As the northern hemisphere enjoys its longest day of the year, the world’s tallest land animals received their spotlight closer to home, in Forest Town.
June 21 is celebrated annually as World Giraffe Day, a day dedicated to raising awareness about the giraffe populations across the globe. This year, the Johannesburg Zoo marked the occasion with a special programme involving young learners from Christian Boys College.
The initiative aimed to educate the learners about the challenges facing giraffes, primarily focusing on habitat loss, which has significantly contributed to their declining numbers. The zoo’s educational session included interactive discussions, informative exhibits, and a unique opportunity for the learners to participate in naming a newborn giraffe.
Born a month ago, on May 21, the young giraffe finally received his name. The anticipation among the learners was palpable as they submitted their chosen names to a draw. Rhys Diesel, one of the learners, had the honour of naming the giraffe. With a wide smile, he revealed the name he had chosen – Dani. Rhys shared his whimsical inspiration, saying, “I named him Dani because I know another boy who has a long neck too.”
The event highlighted the significance of World Giraffe Day, not just as a celebration of these majestic animals, but as a crucial reminder of the conservation efforts needed to protect them. The Johannesburg Zoo’s programme exemplified how educational outreach could foster a deeper connection between young people and wildlife conservation.
