St Columba’s Winter Warmers: A beacon of warmth in chilly times

With the hum of soup pots and the clinking of knitting needles, the Winter Warmers Project springs to life, offering solace and dignity to those in need.

In the heart of Parkview, amid the cold of winter, a beacon of warmth and compassion shines brightly from St Columba’s Presbyterian Church.

Led by the determined Sue Taylor, the crafts and care team embarked on their annual mission, the Winter Warmers Project, to bring comfort to those facing the harsh realities of the season.

As economic downturns plagued the community, the number of souls seeking respite at the St Columba’s soup kitchen increased. Undeterred, Sue and her dedicated team rose to the challenge, crafting over 130 beanies and 80-plus scarves, ensuring that no one faced the winter chill unprotected.

The recipients choose their beanies and scarves, restoring their sense of independence. The heartfelt expressions of gratitude fill the air as they take comfort in the warmth and compassion of the garments. It reflects the universal desire for recognition and respect, echoing the values upheld by St Columba’s and their commitment to uplifting every soul they touch.

Geoff van Heerden expressively captures the sentiment echoing through the corridors of St Columba’s, where gratitude flows freely, and heartfelt thanks are offered: “Mama Christmas, Father Christmas bless you. Thank you St Columba’s for thinking of us.”

This noble endeavour wouldn’t be possible without the generous support of congregations, organisations, and individuals alike. From the residents of Parkview to the tireless volunteers, each contribution adds another layer of warmth to the fabric of compassion.

United in purpose, faith communities like St Columba’s and St Francis of Assisi Anglican Church stand shoulder to shoulder, bridging divides and building bridges of solidarity. Together, they extend a hand of friendship to those in need, reminding us all that in times of darkness, it is love that truly illuminates the way. Remember that even the smallest act of kindness can ignite a flame of hope in the coldest of winters.

And if you feel compelled to join in spreading warmth and cheer, consider donating to St Columba’s outreach, where every contribution helps light up another life in need.

For those eager to contribute to this noble cause, banking details are readily available on the St Columba’s Presbyterian Church website. Simply reference Outreach when making your donation. Let us persist in our efforts to illuminate the lives of those in need, dispelling the chilling shadows of despair with the radiant warmth of compassion and care.
