67 Blankets initiative wraps San Salvador residents in warmth and love
A wave of generosity and warmth swept through Illovo as the 67 Blankets initiative delivered 100 handmade blankets, scarves, and beanies to the residents and attendees of San Salvador Home and Sally’s Protective Workshop.
A heart-warming wave of generosity swept through the San Salvador Home and Sally’s Protective Workshop on June 5, as the 67 Blankets initiative delivered bundles of warmth and love to the residents and attendees.
The visit, led by the initiative’s founder Carolyn Steyn, saw 100 handmade blankets, scarves, and beanies handed out to eager recipients.
Located in Illovo, San Salvador Home is a sanctuary for intellectually handicapped adult women, offering a comprehensive range of services, from 24-hour residential care to psycho-social support and skills development. Sally’s Protective Workshop, established in 1986, extends this mission by providing a supportive workspace for people with disabilities, helping them develop vocational skills and achieve economic independence.
The collaboration with 67 Blankets brought much-needed warmth and cheer to the beneficiaries. The Knitwits, volunteers from the Morningside and Bromhof groups, created vibrant blankets and accessories with meticulous care. The residents’ excitement was palpable as they received their gifts, each one a testament to the kindness and community spirit behind the initiative.
Steyn, along with fellow ambassadors and volunteers, personally handed out the blankets, scarves, and beanies. The event was more than just a charitable act; it was a celebration of solidarity and support for those facing the challenges of intellectual and physical disabilities.
Sue Scott, one of the 67 Blankets ambassadors, played a crucial role in organising the donation. Her previous engagement with Sally’s Protective Workshop, alongside collaborations on knitting projects involving San Salvador Home residents, laid the groundwork for this heartwarming event. The interaction between these organisations highlights the power of community partnerships in making a tangible difference.
As the residents of San Salvador Home and attendees of Sally’s Protective Workshop wrapped themselves in their new blankets, their smiles and gratitude highlighted the profound impact of the initiative. This donation not only provided physical warmth but also a sense of belonging and care.
