Diadora Jozi Cup Tournament director Reuben Mandlazi looks forward to more games

Diadora Jozi Cup Tournament director Reuben Mandlazi said the tournament has gone well.

Diadora Jozi Cup Tournament director, Reuben Mandlazi said stakes remain high in the race for the playoff spots in the tournament.

“The tournament has gone well, and we have been blessed with good weather. Last year we had a slow start because the first week was rain-heavy and some matches were cancelled. Everyone seems to have enjoyed themselves thus far and we hope it continues.”

Mandlazi added that he has enjoyed the spirit in which the games have been played, “Not once have we received any complaints about the disciplines of the teams which is what the tournament is all about. Furthermore, our grounds have all been match-ready which made our lives significantly easier and we’ve managed to start all our matches on time.”

The director added that Sandton Tigers, Wanderers Club, UJ Rivonia, and Old Edwardians had a good start.

“They have been competitive as expected with quality cricket being displayed. I cannot single out each club per age group as it is evident that these clubs have a strong culture that continues on the field of play.”

He added that the support from fans and families has been great. The excitement was accompanied by good music and lots of fun and laughter. Including commentary from the DP World Wanderers Stadium announcer has elevated the experience at featured venues.

Mandlazi noted that the games were highly competitive throughout the entire age group.

“The U11 games bear testimony to the nature of the tournament and the desire for the teams to make it to the playoffs. On the sportsmanship, we witnessed an incident in the Jeppe U16 vs Lenasia Blue U16 match where a Jeppe CC player was injured and took the field to avoid the match being forfeited as per tournament regulations. He faced one ball and retired hurt, the Lenasia boys carried him off the field which was so heartwarming. We are proud of the teams for playing in that type of spirit.”
