Shakeel Reeve: I actively engage with waste pickers by offering assistance and creating a supportive environment for their work in our community.

In a pioneering effort to elevate the status of waste pickers and promote sustainable waste management practices, a collaborative initiative in Parktown has led to the professionalisation of an informal reclaimer camp.

We asked locals how they could help waste pickers in our community…

 

Amaan Christian: We can support waste pickers by implementing recycling grouping in our homes where we group waste such as plastic, paper, glass etc. This will lessen the workload and help reduce injury or contamination from other waste products.
Azzarn Kirsten: I can support waste pickers by sorting and leaving my recyclable materials for collection. It’s a simple action that provides them with valuable resources and promotes environmental sustainability.
