Contra.Joburg promises an exciting two-day open studio event

Contra.Joburg is South Africa’s largest open studio event and will host 170 artists.

Contra.Joburg once again opens the doors to Joburg’s art world, offering visitors an exciting two-day programme from 25 to 26 May.

Locals are encouraged to celebrate Joburg as one of the world’s art cities, fuelled by a network of studio spaces throughout the inner city that gives life daily to Joburg’s status as an art capital.

There will be shuttle services from each gallery with extended running from 10:30 until 17:00 and will run every 20 minutes.

The 2024 edition will shine the spotlight on art buildings, spaces or projects, across the historical City Centre, where visitors are invited to meet the artists, interact with the works, and enjoy a programme of exhibitions, walkabouts, performances, and demonstrations.

Sara Hallatt says, “In 2022, we welcomed more than 2100 people to 11 spaces across the city, and gave visitors access to more than 100 working artists, in their natural habitat – the studio space. As this event comes into its own in its third year, we are excited about our new branding and new direction. We have moved from
OpenStudios.Joburg to Contra.Joburg. We see this as a different kind of art fair. We are contra. This event a celebration of culture in the city, and an opportunity for visitors to foster connections with the creative heart of Joburg. Join us and be Contra.”

Contra.Joburg is excited to continue the partnership with RMB Latitudes, an art fair aimed at celebrating the creative spirit of Joburg’s art world, fostering new relationships in the art world and connecting artists and galleries to buyers and the public.

Contra.Joburg and RMB Latitudes both support a strong focus on access to markets for artists
