Wanderers Club launched its chess club

The Wanderers Club chess club is an evolution of the Rosebank chess club.

Determined to distribute one million chess boards across the world by 2030, the Wanderers Club launched its chess club on January 27.

The head of chess, Jay van der Berg said the chess launch day was the evolution of the Rosebank chess group that was meeting at the club every Wednesday.

“This is primarily a social group ranging from young and adults and now that we have become a part of Wanderers, we can offer a bit more opportunities to our club members in terms of coaching and tournaments. What we are hoping to achieve is to build a thriving community of chess enthusiasts, people who are eager to grow in the hobby.”

Van der Berg added that the club hosts monthly activities which will be free for members and will be an addition to the Wednesday night games.

The head of chess noted that the club was working on the gift of chess initiative which would hopefully be made a reality by 2030. “We have been given 1000 [chess sets] to teach chess to underprivileged communities, including schools, prisons, and refugee centres where we would teach the people how to play.”
