Hyde Park student highlights the importance of choosing a good internship

Being raised by a single mother has instilled a resilient work ethic in Bridgette Moyo.

Hyde Park resident, Bridgette Moyo shares her journey about navigating the complexities of finance to overcoming personal challenges.

The 20-year-old is a third year BCom Accounting student who said her internship journey is a testament to the transformative power of seizing opportunities.

“My interest in accounting has been a firm dedication since I was in Grade 7. I became interested in accounting when I saw the real-life benefits of a successful career in the field, as demonstrated by my family friend’s new car who was also in the field.”

Moyo noted that the combination of being financially secure and enjoying the rewards of her efforts made a lasting impression on her as a child, motivating her to pursue a similar career path as her family friend.

“As I navigate through my internship, I’m continually reminded of the vast opportunities for growth and learning within the finance sector. Growing up in Hyde Park, raised by a single mother, instilled a resilient work ethic and a desire to excel against all odds.”

The BCom Accounting student added that navigating the job market in a time of low unemployment brought challenges.

She said, “Securing current training was difficult. The competitive environment and high demand for opportunities in my field require a lot of effort.”

Moyo first did extensive research to find potential internship opportunities that fit her career goals. This involved constantly going through various job boards, company websites, and online platforms to find open positions. She also had to understand the specific requirements of each role and adapting it to her role was challenging.

She concluded by encouraging students who were looking for internships to look for work that corresponds with their field of study,

“They will have the opportunity to apply the acquired theoretical knowledge in a practical environment. This hands-on experience not only strengthens your academic understanding but also allows you to see how concepts and theories learned in the classroom translate to real-world scenarios.”
