Johannesburg Water to liaise with Johannesburg Roads Agency to fix unsafe excavation

Ward 90 councillor, Martin Williams said burst pipes on corner Buckingham Avenue and other intersecting avenues were problematic since 2016.

The Gazette was alerted on November 30 about an excavation on the corner of Clarence and Buckingham avenues in Craighall Park.

The excavation posed a danger to motorists who had to swerve into oncoming traffic to avoid the exposed pipes and curb.

Johannesburg Water spokesperson Nombuso Shabalala confirmed that the utility was aware of the exposed pipes.

“There was a burst water pipe located below a stormwater pipe. The burst water pipe damaged the stormwater pipe, and the Johannesburg Water team had to remove the stormwater pipe to reach the water pipe, to get enough working space.”

Shabalala added that the stormwater repairs were referred to the Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) and Johannesburg Water would follow up with the JRA to prioritise the repair.

Ward 90 councillor Martin Williams noted that he had escalated the excavation numerous times to involved parties, with the JRA being the latest entity.
