Vox Pop: Locals share their thoughts on the Nelson Mandela Annual Lecture

The Nelson Mandela Foundation honoured the 10th anniversary of Madiba’s passing on December 5 with the 21st instalment of the Nelson Mandela Annual Lecture , with Nobel Peace Prize laureate Malala Yousafzai as the speaker at the Joburg Theatre. Asanda Ndlovu: The lecture was an eye-opener to how difficult it is to be a woman in society. The lecture has also helped me to reflect on ways to better things like gender apartheid, especially because Malala is only 26 years old which is very inspiring for me.

Suleman Reddy: What stuck with me from Malala’s lecture was when Graça Machel said human suffering was wrong and had the same detrimental effects no matter where it was happening.
Mbali Ncube: The emphasis on family and community stood out for me. Graça Machel thanked one of the panelists for bringing the story of gender -apartheid home and it’s important to recognise how connected we are in global issues.
