Imbumba Dance Group entertained an audience at Theatre on the Square

Theatre on the Square recently drew a diverse audience to match the diversity of performances in a blend of entertainment from local artists in a one-time-only performance of From Soweto with Smiles, a multi-cultural musical experience.

A coming-of-age story, From Soweto with Smiles, finds a young man reaching adulthood and the inevitable quest for a wife. When word gets out, women flaunt themselves at the young stud, eager to become his wife. In the end, it’s down to two and he must choose.

The narrative is richly supported by song and dance from three female and one male vocalist who steal the hearts of the audience members.

Written and produced by Desiree Levin, who supports cultural initiatives, especially those that blend colour and creed to demonstrate unity in diversity, the show had a dynamic of its own.

Front: Cassy van Heerden.

Levin said, “From inception, the script took many forms, and while I might like to think of myself as the original creator, with inputs from the entire cast, taking out and adding in, the script really wrote itself.”

She added that she was proud and looked forward to extending and expanding the venture to bigger venues with her mind set on an international sponsor to make this possible.
