DP World Lions cricket woman player’s dream comes true

DP World Lions cricket women's player recently graduated with a bachelor of education degree.

DP World Lions cricket women’s player Samantha Schutte’s 2023 highlights include becoming a professional cricketer at provincial level.

Schutte said playing professionally seemed like a far-fetched dream because cricketers could only play professionally for the national team. However, recently women’s cricket has been professionalised in South Africa at provincial level and her dreams have come true.

The 24-year-old said she had not always been able to balance everything she had going on in her life. “I struggled to find time to prioritise the sport because I had to have a job to support myself while playing. I was not able to train every day and therefore was not able to improve my fitness and skills.”

She recently attained a Bachelor of Education in Foundation Phase degree and aspired to be a remedial teacher who specialises in children diagnosed with autism.

The bowler said her coaches and teammates helped her get through the difficult days. “I have also learnt over the years that in the game, sometimes you have to accept that not every day will be your day and things will go wrong. I cannot control the bad outcomes, I try to remain humble and be grateful for the opportunity God has given me.”

Schutte’s advice to young woman cricket players is, “Make sure you receive an education to help you with life after cricket. You will not play cricket forever and will need something to fall back on, I believe studying while playing or before playing is the best way to have a solid base.”
