The 67 Blankets for Nelson Mandela is available at Exclusive Books

NPO founder Carolyn Steyn was challenged by Zelda la Grange to make 67 blankets as a contribution to Mandela Day in December 2013.

NPO founder Carolyn Steyn launched the 67 Blankets book at Exclusive Books in Rosebank Mall on October 30.

The book is a collection of all the people involved in knitting scarves and blankets since 2014 and which have been distributed throughout the country.

Steyn said, “Since I founded 67 Blankets for Nelson Mandela Day in 2014, this initiative has grown into a global movement. Thousands of active members in South Africa and around the world crochet and knit blankets and scarves, all made with love, a demonstration of the true meaning of ubuntu. For many years we have also worked with correctional facilities to help rehabilitate prison inmates.”

She added that she was proud to say by end of 2022, 67 Blankets had distributed over 67 000 handmade blankets to those in need, setting several Guinness World Records in the process.

The non-profit organisation was founded in 2014 after Steyn was challenged by Zelda la Grange to make 67 blankets as a contribution to Mandela Day in December 2013 – she turned to friends and family to help her realise this target.
